Using the Gantt tool¶
If you’re not already in the tasks spreadsheet, click Tasks in the dashboard menu in the top.
To toggle the Gantt scheduler, click the Schedule button in the toolbar.
If you haven’t started to schedule anything yet, the area to the right in this
view should be empty. This area is the Gantt area where you can drag and drop
objects and resize them as you wish to change how they are scheduled in time.
Try this now by just clicking and dragging with the mouse in the Gantt area and
Command+Z to undo what you added if you want
If you click and start to drag on a row that corresponds to a level over tasks in the hierarchy, all tasks under that level will automatically be scheduled based on your project’s workflow schema and you may have to re-schedule them.
When you have started to schedule some tasks, you can easily move and drag the tasks horizontally to re-schedule them as you wish. The same applies if you wish to change the start and end dates of the tasks, just drag in the left and right edges to change their date span.
If you want to move an entire sequence or shot, just drag the object and all tasks under that object will automatically be re-scheduled for you.
If you don’t want ftrack to auto link your tasks when scheduling a whole sequence or shot, uncheck the Auto link tasks option in the Gantt settings menu that you can find via the settings button to the right in the top toolbar. ftrack will if disabled not use the workflow schema to schedule the tasks.
When you schedule your tasks you can get ftrack to match the bid of the tasks with the duration. Imagine you have set a bid to two days, the duration when you drag the task will then automatically be set to two days. If you don’t want this to happen, you can uncheck the Match bid duration option in the Gantt settings menu that you can find via the settings button to the right in the toolbar.
The boxes that represents tasks in the Gantt view can be more informative with layers to show logged time, progress/status and type. For instance, the logged time overlay will display how much time that is logged on the task relative to its bid.
Using the timeline¶
To make the scheduling process easier in the Gantt view, you can change the date span you see in the Gantt area with the timeline that you can find above the spreadsheet. If it’s not visible, you can show it by checking the Timeline option in the Display menu that you will can find via the settings button to the right in the toolbar.
The timeline handles can be dragged to the left or the right to either increase or decrease the date span in the Gantt area.
To re-schedule one or more tasks, simply click and drag to move it or them. If you want, you can move an entire sequence or shot to move all tasks that belongs to that object.
Moving resources and depending tasks affects the rest of the schedule. How the re-scheduling of tasks affects other resources and dependencies is easy to see in the Resources pane in the Gantt view. If it’s not visible, you can show it by selecting Resources in the Display menu that you can find via the settings button to the right in the toolbar.
If you have a couple of tasks (at least) connected to each other through dependencies and have assigned resources to the tasks, you can see in the Resources pane how they affect each other when you change some settings. Double click a task in the Gantt area and see how the selected task loads in the Resources pane with all dependent tasks and assigned resources. When you now move a task in the Gantt area, you can see how it moves and affects everything in the Resources pane. If a move of a task will cause a conflict with another scheduled task or resource, you will see that in the Resources pane.
When you move a task, you can cascade your changes down in the dependency chain.
By holding down the
Command key when you move a task you
will also move all dependent tasks.
Getting details of a task¶
To get more information about a task, you can either bring in the sidebar by clicking the task name or by just scrolling horizontally in the spreadsheet to the left.
